About the Show
Director Notes:
This production is not your typical musical. You’ll enter the mind of Bobby, a 35 year old bachelor, as he looks back at a variety of experiences with his married friends and his girlfriends. This is an example of a “concept musical” where the plot doesn’t matter quite as much as the characters, their interactions with each other, and their emotions. For those unfamiliar with Company, there are two things you’ll want to keep in mind as you watch.
- First, not all memories are accurate. As you watch different moments in Bobby’s life, think about what scenes are being misremembered, exaggerated, or just plain wrong. I hope you empathize with Bobby, but stay critical. He’s got a lot of learning to do.
- Second, you’ll see right away that this is clearly a show centered around marriage—but why stop there? The message of Company can be applied to your family ties and friendships too, not just romantic relationships.
Surrounding Bobby is a delightful cast of strange and wonderful characters who will all remind you of similarly strange and wonderful people in your own life. It has been a joy to direct such a hard-working and exceptionally skilled cast, all fantastic performers and patient, kind teammates. My thanks also goes out to the crew and creatives behind the scenes, including those who joined the team in the middle of the rehearsal process just because they wanted to be involved! You have all made this show something truly special.
Particularly notable in this production are our fantastic musicians, conquering the devilishly difficult Sondheim score and adding so much to the emotional impact of the music. And of course, a particularly apt thank you goes out to Ellie—my wife, my rock, and my best friend. You make me aliv
